Amid market uncertainty and cryptocurrency price fluctuations, Ethena’s USDe went through a tumultuous phase, briefly slipping to 65 cents exclusively on Binance during a significant market sell-off.

Understanding the Cryptocurrency Price Fluctuations

Despite social media discussions hinting at a global de-pegging, the disruption was confined solely to Binance. In contrast, key trading venues like Fluid, Curve, and Uniswap maintained their liquidity, with only minor deviations observed, under 100 basis points. Most notably, on Bybit, USDe only reduced to around 92 cents, highlighting Binance’s unique situation.

Binance’s challenges stemmed from its lack of direct dealer relationships seen in other exchanges, affecting the minting and redemption processes for USDe. This absence hindered market makers’ ability to perform arbitrage transactions, as Binance’s inflexible infrastructure failed to manage the intense volatility effectively.

Moreover, Binance’s reliance on a less liquid order book for its oracle system exacerbated the issue, causing massive liquidations. Ideally, it should have referenced more liquid venues like Curve. The cascading liquidations triggered by this approach amplified the artificial price fall.

Haseeb Qureshi, Managing Partner at Dragonfly, insightfully remarked that primary venues should guide liquidation mechanisms, drawing attention to the deficiencies in Binance’s approach. Ethena Labs founder Guy Young echoed these sentiments, characterizing the episode as isolated and linked to Binance’s internal mechanics rather than a universal de-peg.

Guy Young highlighted that even during the turmoil, USDe’s redemption remained possible, with the supply retracting from $9 billion to $6 billion swiftly, illustrating the durability of its system. Throughout this ordeal, USDe was supported by over $66 million in over-collateralization, a fact verified by entities like Chaos Labs and Chainlink.

Conclusively, cryptocurrency price fluctuations brought unique challenges, but the USDe demonstrated resilience. The main revelation is that Binance’s internal issues, not market fundamentals, influenced its fleeting drop.

At Bakara Invest, our analysis suggests that understanding infrastructure shortcomings and ensuring robust risk management systems are fundamental in navigating cryptocurrency price fluctuations effectively.
